Long time member of the QP Group Lenny Gordan is exhibiting his superb Noir photos at the Phoenix Cinema, East Finchley tube.

Lenny’s photos have been used as book covers by MacMillan, Tropismos, and others. He was recently published in the Guardian and for Blackwell publications. He teaches at the London School of Economics, and he is represented by Millennium Images, www.milim.com

Lenny is showing along with photographer Dan Casey, whose work features the Pipettes, a female rock band.

The opening is on Thursday 24 February at 7pm. A show not to be missed!

February Meeting – Tuesday 15 at 6.30 pm

Please note that our February meeting will take place at 6.30 pm on TUESDAY 15 February at the Gallery in Willesden Green Library Centre.

This is a change from our regular day as there will be an opening of “An Exhibition in Print” on Thursday 17^th. This is a show consisting of a range of images from lithography, woodcuts and photos – virtually anything printed. Some of you who are BAR members may want to submit work for the show in which case you will need to hand in work either on Friday 11 February between 3 and 6 pm or the following day at the same time. If you are a member of BAR you can submit a maximum of 5 pieces at a cost of £6 each.

As ever please do bring along some work be it a completed project, work in progress or just some thing that you find interesting. Paper prints and electronic media welcome as we will have a laptop, projector and screen.

Our meetings are designed to bring together photographers with different levels of interests and expertise who are interested in developing their personal approach to photography and improving their skills.

We will aim to finish the meeting no later than 9.15 when those that want to continue discussion and debate retire to a local inn for refreshments.

The QP meeting at the Willesden Library on 20 January was attended by around twenty stalwart members, at least a dozen of whom showed work. Here are a few sample pictures from the two photographers Sabine Thoele and Simon Butcher, who’s work exemplified the high standard of work shown, inspirational and full of fresh ideas.

Catherine Ames – Corner Buildings Project

In response to our call for news of ongoing projects from our members, Catherine Ames sent in a remarkable image that we are very pleased to publish, as well as some information about its background and about herself.

I’ve been working on this project of digital architectural collage for a few years, “corner buildings” all over the world. I’ve already published one preliminary book, with lulu.com, which I’ve brought to the Queen’s Park meeting. It is a bit of an ongoing project, which I would like to culminate in a show. I’ve shown some very large prints of these in a group show at Gallery 94 on Cleveland Street last year.

I’m also in the process of walking some of the famous long distance paths of
England, and hope to make books on those as well. That is not collage. My
switch from the darkroom to digital happened in 2000, exactly 10 years ago.
In the 1980′s and 1990′s I was well known in the US as a large format black
and white (silver gelatin) photographer and I feature in Rotovision’s 2002
“World’s Top Landscape Photography” book. I’ve had shows in the US of the black and white work.

October meeting – 6.30 Thursday 28th

Our next meeting will take place at 6.30 pm prompt on Thursday 28 October in the Gallery at Willesden Green Library Centre. Our meetings are designed to bring together photographers with different levels of interests and expertise who are interested in developing their personal approach to photography and improving their skills.

Occasionally we set a fun project and this month we are asking members to produce one image based on montage. There has been a very long tradition of ‘constructing’ images in photography dating back to the 19th century but it really came into it’s own in the early 1920′s with the political Dadaist movement with the likes of John Heartfield and Hannah Hoch in Switzerland and Germany, Rodchenko in Russia, Man Ray and other surrealists in France. Advertising quickly saw the value of it but it was also used by others as a photographic technique such as the quirky Angus MacBean in the 1940′s and 50′s through to Peter Kennard in Britain in the 80′s and 90′s. What would you produce as a contribution to 21st century montage?

We will aim to end the meeting no later than 9.15 when those that want to can continue any discussion in a nearby local hostelry.

For the fourth year QP Photography was represented at the QP Day festivities. Organised by Mark (Adams) six intrepid photographers (Mark, Pete, Vanja, Quentin, Mary and Tony) set up shop to publicise LIP and our group, and to sell photos. Sales were not too hot, but there was a lot of interest in our activities, with Pete collecting email addresses from many people thinking of joining. It was a busy and fun day, in glorious sunshine.

2nd Opening of Stop Motion

Flood Light – Constantine Gras

11 short films will be screened as part of a Flood Light programme at the Portobello Film Festival on Wednesday 15 September at 6pm. The venue is Inn on the Green, 3 Thorpe Close, under the Westway and a few minutes walk from Ladbroke Grove tube station. It is a free event.

Flood Light was a film making project run by Constantine Gras as part of the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea’s InTRANSIT festival of arts and was supported by the V&A Museum. Flood Light invited filmmakers to connect with the Grand Union Canal and Westway, two inter-related transport and built structures in North Kensington. 8 short films were submitted by established or emerging filmmakers and a panel selected Intersections by Rickster as the best film. Constantine lead two practical filmmaking guided tours for residents of the borough who had the opportunity to edit their footage at the V&A Museum’s Sackler Centre for Education. For his own personal film project, Constantine undertook 6 months of archive research using the cultural resources of the V&A Museum, London Canal Museum, London Metropolitan Archives and the British Museum.

Grand opening of ‘Stop Motion’, Thursday 19 August

The first of the two openings of our 7th Annual Exhibition went with a swing, and a good time was had by all. Amanda worked her usual magic in providing a great nosh and good wine, which was very much appreciated by everybody. The buzz was great and it was difficult to break up the party at closing time.

Don’t forget, there is another opening for the second great set of photographers’ work on Thursday 2nd September. Be there!
