Janet Nabney
Initially I was given a box brownie at the age of 8. I used this to take poor black and white photos of squirrels in Central Park in New York City and subsequently developed and printed the film in my Uncles small kitchen in his apartment. He was a very enterprising man and rigged up an enlarger on the draining board next to the kitchen sink!
Since then, I have always been interested in making images. In fact I have always been interested in ‘making’.
I paint, draw, knit, sew, embroider, crochet, make paper, origami and books. In fact I would style myself a ‘maker’.
Lately, I have become intrigued to use a computer as an adjunct in the creation of imagery; both still and moving.
I have B.A. from the University of Wisconsin (where I majored in English, yes, I am literate, just), and later, a B.A. from Winchester School of Art in Knit/Fashion.
I have fairly recent M.A.s from Winchester College in Textile Design, Goldsmith’s College in Textile Art and Camberwell School of Art in Digital Art.
I have written three books on machine knitting [sadly now out of print] for which I drew all the line drawings.
Recently I joined the R.P.S. and L.I.P. and look forward to exploring the possibilities of using photography to extend my visual repertoire.
